Peel Regional Police sent us the following news release. Given the seriousness of the issue we consider that we must warn dealers and consumers alike.

RE: BUYER BEWARE

Mississauga - Peel Regional Police Auto Theft bureau is issuing a warning to car dealers.

During the last several weeks people identifying themselves as working for a company called (... see note below...) have been selling stolen vehicles to area car dealerships. Several dealers in Mississauga and Brampton have been victimized.

The vehicles are being sold with high quality counterfeit vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and Federal certification labels. The vehicles to date are a 1997 Toyota Four Runner, 1997 Ford Mustang and a 1997 Ford Expedition (Total value of $110,000). Investigators are confident the parties involved have more vehicles and will attempt to sell them.
