Sale of Salvaged and Stolen Vehicles

The sale of salvaged and stolen vehicles in Ontario is a serious problem. For this reason, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), the Collision Industry Action Group (C.I.A.G.) and relevant stakeholders -including all major insurance companies- are working together to address this issue. Their efforts are geared towards increased mechanisms for the disclosure of accidents, and preventing written-off cars -deemed to be fit for parts only- from getting back on Ontario's roads.

INSPECTION OF REBUILT VEHICLES

Ontario is introducing a new consumer protection program to permanently identify vehicles that have been "written-off' after a serious motor vehicle collision.

Vehicles that are branded "salvage" must successfully pass a NEW structural inspection prior to being branded "rebuilt" and being able to be licensed for legal use on Ontario's roads. These vehicles will continue to be required to also successfully complete an inspection for an Ontario safety standards certificate.

Only a licensed facility will be allowed to inspect "salvage" branded vehicles and issue structural inspection certificates. To find out the standards and requirements for this new program, and how to become a licensed facility, orientation sessions are being offered across Ontario.
