Uniglobe Auto Brokers

The board of Trustees of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund made a decision on an important claim at its November meeting. The claimant, John Lesko, one of approximately 300 consumers defrauded in late 1993 by a company named Uniglobe Auto Brokers was awarded $15,000, the maximum amount allowed per claim.

Repossession of allegedly stolen vehicles

On November 23, 1998, the Hamilton Spectator reported that some vehicles were seized in Welland as part of an investigation centered around what appears to be an auto theft ring. Police estimate that as many as 540 stolen vehicles might be in possession of unwary consumers.

Licensing Fraud

Two recent articles published by The Toronto Star shed light on the way criminal elements are able to sell stolen vehicles to unsuspecting consumers. The first article, published on December 9, 1998, explains how these thieves take advantage of loopholes at licensing office in order to register stolen cars. The second one, from December 10, 1998, suggests that those buying from sources other than registered dealers should take extra steps to ensure they are not buying stolen cars.
