Toronto, May 29, 2002 - Peter Eatson, president of
Peterborough Volkswagen-Audi,
has been named the new President
and Chair of the Board of the
Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry
Council.
OMVIC, the motor vehicle dealer
industry's self-management body,
administers Ontario's Motor
Vehicle Dealers Act on behalf of
the provincial Consumer
Ministry. Its mandate is to
protect the rights of consumers,
enhance the professionalism of
the industry and to ensure fair,
honest and open competition for
registered motor vehicle
dealers.
“Peter Eatson has been in the
automotive industry for more
than forty years,” notes Carl
Compton, OMVIC’s executive
director. “But it’s not just his
experience that makes him such a
valuable addition as chair, it’s
his reputation. His remarks are
always careful, deliberate and
thoughtful and always presented
with a view to advancing OMVIC’s
priorities of consumer
protection and dealer
professionalism.”
Peter Eatson started in the
automotive industry in 1960 and
opened his own dealership,
Peterborough Volkswagen, in
1969.
He is the past president of the
Canadian Automobile Association,
and past president of the
Ontario Automobile Dealer
Association. He is also past
chairman of the Volkswagen
National Dealer Council. An
active member of the
Peterborough community, he is a
past trustee of St. Joseph’s
Hospital and currently
vice-president of the Rotary
Club of Peterborough.
“A lot of people don’t realise
how important OMVIC is in
protecting their rights when it
comes to automotive sales,”
Eatson said recently from his
office in Peterborough, “Take
curbsiders, for example. These
unscrupulous people purport to
be selling their own cars
through private deals. They are
not. They are simply
unregistered car dealers
masquerading as private citizens
and it is the consumer that is
losing out. Curbsiders undermine
the trust that people have in
our industry and we need to
pursue them with vigour. That’s
what OMVIC is all about: a
professional industry, a level
playing field, and a protected
consumer.”
Peter Eatson became president of
OMVIC on May 22, 2002. He
replaces Paul Burroughs, owner
of City Chev Olds in Hamilton,
who had been president of the
council for the past two years.
