Toronto, November 03, 2009
- The Ontario Motor Vehicle
Industry Council (OMVIC) reports
Adeolu Adebajo and Kaybee
Adebayo have been convicted of
18 counts each of being
unregistered motor vehicle
dealers (curbsiders). OMVIC
regulates Ontario registered
dealers and administers consumer
protection legislation.
Adebajo and Adebayo were
convicted June 22, 2009 and
sentenced October 26, 2009.
Adebajo was sentenced to a
period of 10 days in jail on
each count (180 days). Adebayo
received a fine of $2,000 per
count for a total of $36,000. In
addition, there is a victim of
crime surcharge of 25% on each
offence, plus court costs.
Adebajo was previously
charged and convicted of
curbsiding in 2003, 2004 and
2006. Adebayo did not have any
previous convictions.
Curbsiders are unlicensed
dealers in the business of
selling cars, but who pose as
private sellers. The vehicles
they sell are often
misrepresented,
accident-damaged,
odometer-tampered, stolen, or
have liens against them.
“Consumers should know that
more than 25% of used vehicle
classifieds are posted by
curbsiders,” explains Brenda
McIntyre, spokesperson for
OMVIC. “Should you run into
problems with a vehicle you buy
privately there is very little
recourse. Consumers are
encouraged to shop through
Ontario-registered dealers so
their purchase is protected.”
Consumers can identify
Ontario-registered dealers by
looking for the blue and yellow
"Ontario-registered dealer"
decal or by asking dealers to
provide their OMVIC
registration. To find a
registered dealer or verify
registration, contact OMVIC
(www.omvic.on.ca,
1-800-943-6002) or use OMVIC's
dealer locator.
