Ensures Consumer Protection
Ontario Minister of Consumer
and Commercial Relations David
Tsubouchi today announced six
consumer/government appointments
to the boards of the newly
created Ontario Motor Vehicle
Industry Council (OMVIC) and the
Technical Standards and Safety
Authority (TSSA).
The three appointments to the
OMVIC are Pauline Mitchell of
Hamilton; Whipple Steinkrauss,
Willowdale; and Sue Corke,
Toronto. The TSSA appointments
are Joyce Feinberg, Toronto;
Rosalie Daly Todd, Manotick; and
Sue Corke (see attached
biographies).
"This government remains
committed to public safety and
protecting consumers in
Ontario," said Minister
Tsubouchi. "We will ensure these
new entities operate in an open,
fair and accountable manner-a
commitment the industries share
with the ministry." He added,
"The representatives being
appointed today will help ensure
consumer interests are
protected. As well, the new TSSA
will have the resources needed
to ensure the continuation of
Ontario's international
reputation as a leader in public
safety."
Both OMVIC's and TSSA's
boards are made up of a
cross-section of industry and
non-industry representatives in
addition to the minister's
appointments. Motor vehicle
dealers are the first of four
business sectors regulated by
MCCR to move to self-management.
Real estate agents and brokers
and travel agencies and tour
operators will follow in the
spring and cemetery operators by
the end of the year.
While OMVIC and the TSSA will
take over delivery of services,
government retains
responsibility for the Motor
Vehicle Dealers Act and the
public safety statutes to be
administered by the TSSA. The
ministry will monitor OMVIC's
and the safety authority's
performance to ensure that
standards and services are
maintained or improved. "Moving
to self-management will free up
our small business sector from
needless red tape which will
create jobs," Mr. Taubouchi
said.
