Consumer Protection Legislation

The following pieces of legislation might be useful for consumers and are available online via the Ontario Government's e-Laws website.

Please note that OMVIC does not deal with motor vehicle repair issues unless done by registrant. Consumers will need to contact the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) for all other repair issues. General repairs to a motor vehicle fall under the jurisdiction of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) which is administered by the Ministry of Consumer Services (MCS). In addition, the MTO investigates repairs completed as a function of the issuing of a Safety Standard Certificate (SSC.) MTO enforcement officers might refer complainants to MCS when their complaints fall under the jurisdiction of the CPA (e.g. warranty of repairs, actual costs of repairs not reflecting estimate provided, etc.)
