If you’re looking to purchase a late model used car or truck, chances are you’ve checked out some of the online auto marketplaces such as Kijiji, AutoTRADER or others. While there are a lot of legitimate vehicles available through these sites, there are also online scams you should watch out for. The best way to protect yourself against scams is to educate yourself, ask lots of questions, and learn to recognize red flags.

For some, a little shopping puts a smile on their pale sunshine-deprived faces. And many savvy shoppers have learned the next three months is not a bad time to buy a car. Because December’s hectic buzz is followed by a period of semi-hibernation, fewer shoppers brave the elements to visit showrooms….and dealers appreciate these hearty souls’ efforts…. Meaning, many a great deal can be had when car-shopping in December, January and February.

OMVIC administers and enforces the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA) on behalf of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services. OMVIC maintains a fair and informed vehicle sales marketplace by regulating dealers and salespersons, regularly inspecting Ontario's 8,000 dealerships and 30,000 salespeople, maintaining a complaint line for consumers and conducting investigations and prosecutions of industry misconduct and illegal sales (curbsiding). OMVIC is also responsible for administering the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund on behalf of its Board of Trustees.

Consumer Line is OMVIC’s consumer guide to Ontario’s motor vehicle dealer industry. It is published throughout the year, delivered free via e-mail and provides consumers with useful tips, industry news and important, up-to-date information.
