OMVIC Blog: Car Buying Tips

Born to be wild? Know your rights

Get your motor running
head out on the highway
lookin’ for adventure
and whatever comes your way

The Open Road

Steppenwolf was definitely not talking about packing up the station wagon, programming the GPS, adjusting the climate control and arriving at a destination looking fresh and relaxed. ‘Born to be Wild’ is about feeling the exhilaration and adrenalin that only riding a motorcycle on the open road can give you.

Tis the Season

As April vacillates between warm and cold temperatures this is the exact time of year bike enthusiasts start to feel ‘the itch’. And we’re not talking about ragweed.  ‘The itch’ can only be described as the bikers’ need to get back out there, feel the wind in  their face, smell the countryside and feel all the stress and tension melt away as they just focus on riding.

‘The itch’ cannot be cured by driving a car, not even a convertible.

Two Different Beasts?

For some, the cure is to get a new bike, because as any bike enthusiast will tell you, you can never have too many bikes. And while driving a car and driving a motorcycle are clearly two very different experiences, believe it or not, the rules about buying a car or motorcycle in Ontario are the same.

Any business selling motorcycles that are intended for use on the road in Ontario must be registered with OMVIC. This means bike buyers have protections that go beyond leather and helmets. OMVIC-Registered motorcycle dealers have to make full disclosure about a bike’s past use, history and condition and they must abide by Ontario’s all-in price advertising laws. Consumers who buy from an OMVIC-Registered dealer are protected, and should anything go wrong with the purchase, consumers are eligible to access the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund.

Protect Yourself!

As for consumers who decide to buy a bike from a private seller—they have no consumer protection legislation to fall back on and there are no mandatory disclosures – its caveat emptor. If something goes wrong after the sale, a private purchaser’s only recourse would be to sue civilly, so OMVIC encourages consumers to be vigilant and ask lots of questions to screen for scams and curbsiders—illegal, unlicensed dealers. Yes there are motorcycle curbsiders. To learn more, visit tips on how to avoid a curbsider.

Whether you’re going to experience the great outdoors  hunching over  a sport bike, leaning back on a touring bike or sitting up nice and tall on a dual sport motorcycle, be smart before you buy.
