Pre-Delivery Inspection: Important Steps to Take

Bought a new car and waiting to take delivery? Make sure the excitement you feel lasts for days and isn’t snuffed out by any unexpected disappointments. Keep calm and take your time; ensure all your questions/concerns are answered to YOUR satisfaction. To help with this process, OMVIC recommends making a ‘vehicle delivery’ checklist:

1. Take a thorough walk-around with the salesperson to inspect for any scratches/damages. This should be done in daylight or a well-lit area.

2. Have the salesperson explain how to operate all systems and features of the vehicle.

3. If you previously had an agreement that repairs would be done or options added, ensure these are completed before handing over any money or signing-off on the final contract.

4. Sometimes when purchasing a vehicle, a consumer will sign a credit application right away and then sign the loan agreement at the time of delivery. Ensure the loan agreement has the same terms/interest rate as agreed upon and no additional fees have been added.

5. Ensure you obtain all the keys to the vehicle.

6. Have the maintenance and warranty requirements explained to you and ensure you receive a copy of the owner’s manual (or link to electronic version).

7. Ensure you get copies of ALL paperwork (including contract, loan and warranty documentation, safety and e-test).

8. If the vehicle is pre-owned, make sure there are a spare tire and jack (if the vehicle comes with one).

9. If the vehicle is equipped with locking lug nuts on the wheels, ensure that it comes with a key.

In some instances, a new version of the contract is presented when you pick up the vehicle. If this is the case, check to make sure the terms and costs are the same as the initial agreement.
