Although buying a car can be intimidating, learning your car-buying rights is one of the best ways to squash your fears. As part of OMVIC’s mandate to protect and educate consumers, OMVIC offers free seminars to Ontario residents looking to improve their car-buying knowledge.
The presentations typically cover car-buying basics, such as what to consider when choosing a vehicle or the consumer’s right to all-in price advertising; however, the presentations can also be tailored to fit specific groups. Scott Long, OMVIC's Education Officer explains, “some high school students and/or their parents are usually looking for an inexpensive car, so I focus on how they can protect themselves when buying a used vehicle from a dealer or privately, and how to avoid buying from curbsiders (unlicensed dealers)."

These seminars generate very positive feedback: participants are very grateful to learn their rights and have the opportunity to ask questions and get informed answers.
While most presentations take place at libraries and newcomer centres, the Communications and Education team is eager to expand to driving schools, high schools, colleges and even universities. In fact, any community group or school that would like a presentation is welcome to contact OMVIC to make arrangements. OMVIC requires a suitable location and time, and a guaranteed minimum attendance of 15 people.
If your group or class would like to host a FREE car-buying seminar, please contact scott.long@omvic.on.ca
