OMVIC Blog: Car Buying Tips

Holiday Car Buying Tips

Dec 24

Thursday, December 24, 2015  RssIcon

Thinking about decking the driveway with a new set of wheels this holiday season? Or resolving to improve your ride in the New Year? Well, OMVIC would like to gift you with these holiday car buying tips:

Review Advertisements Carefully

With the holiday season in full force and boxing week promotions snowballing—if you are in the market to purchase a car or happen to stumble across a deal that sparks your interest, remember these helpful tips on how to review advertisements:

  • All-in price advertising — It’s the Law: If an OMVIC-Registered Dealer advertises a vehicle with a price, that price must include all fees the dealer intends to collect. The only additional fees a dealer can add on top of the price advertised, are HST and Licensing.

Tips For Buying From An OMVIC-Registered Dealer
  • Ensure the salesperson understands your needs. Not being listened to? Buy elsewhere.
  • Take a thorough test drive—don’t just take the vehicle around the block.
  • Only pay for optional products or services you want and believe have value.
  • Buying a used vehicle? Ask for a history report and consider an inspection by a trusted mechanic.
  • Get all conditions in writing (e.g. Repairs to be conducted).
  • Get all disclosures and promises in writing (e.g. No accidents).
  • Carefully read the contract (and loan agreement)—there is no cooling-off period once the contract is signed.

Remember, Ontario’s consumer protection laws only apply if you purchase a car from an OMVIC-Registered Dealer. If something goes wrong with a private purchase, you’re on your own with little recourse (other than to sue civilly).

Don’t get a lump of coal in your garage, make your next vehicle purchase a merry one; get educated, know your rights and learn to ask the right questions. For more information visit omvic.ca.
