Did you know that if a motorcycle dealer advertises a price for a bike that price must include all fees and charges the dealer intends to collect; the only additional charges the dealer can add are HST and licensing (or for options the consumer has added).

Additional Tips For Buying A Bike From An OMVIC-Registered Dealer

• Only pay for optional products or services you want and believe have value.
• Buying a used bike? Ask for a history report and consider an inspection by a trusted mechanic.
• Get all conditions in writing (e.g. repairs to be conducted).
• Get all disclosures and promises in writing (e.g. no accidents).
• Carefully read the contract (and loan agreement)—there is no cooling-off period once the contract is signed.

Remember, consumers who purchase a bike from an OMVIC-Registered Dealer are protected by Ontario’s consumer protection laws and the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund. Private purchasers receive neither. If problems arise with a private vehicle purchase the buyer is, basically, on his or her own with little recourse other than the courts.
