A car buyer contacted OMVIC’s Complaints and Inquiries team to ask about the OMVIC Fee. Can he opt out of the charge?

Colin: "I bought a new car from an OMVIC-Registered Dealer last week. She charged me $10 for something called the OMVIC Fee. What is it? Could I have not paid it?"

OMVIC: All car dealers in Ontario must pay this money to OMVIC for every vehicle they sell or lease. Consumers will see the $10 itemized on a Bill of Sale as either the OMVIC fee or as a transaction fee. While not all dealers pass the transaction fee on to their customers, it is allowed and many do.
A consumer can ask the dealer to absorb the charge, but the dealer does not have to do so.

Where Does the Money go?

The transaction fee, with dealer and salesperson registration fees, fund OMVIC.
It ensures OMVIC can carry out its mandate: protecting consumers, investigating and prosecuting non-compliance , ensuring industry professionalism and educating consumers on their car-buying rights. To learn more about OMVIC’s role and how we protect car-buyers, visit the About OMVIC webpage
