Buying a new or used vehicle can be stressful if you don’t know where to start, but resources and help are available online. Before you sign on the dotted line or step into a dealership for your next car, here are the top 3 ways consumers can ensure a smooth car-buying process.
Do your research
Before you decide on a vehicle, get all the information you need to make an informed purchase. Decide what you want with your vehicle, like an extended warranty. A knowledgeable purchase is a safer purchase. Find out as much as you can about the car you’re buying and the dealership you’re buying from. If you can, buy from an OMVIC-registered dealer. If there are problems with the sale, you can always file a complaint with our consumer support team if the dealer is unwilling to help solve the problem with you.
If consumers are unsure where to begin their research, OMVIC has several consumer tips on its website to ensure you find the right data about a vehicle’s history, budgeting, financing and more.
Always get conditions in writing
Any conditions included in your contract must be in writing. Conditions mean a contract is only valid if certain circumstances are met, like “subject to my mechanic’s approval” or “subject to repairs being made”.
Getting conditions in writing ensures you have the proper grounds to file a complaint if the contract is not fulfilled by a dealer or salesperson. Not all dealers may agree to put conditions in writing: if that happens, you may want to reconsider buying from that dealer.
Remember – once a car sales contract is signed by the dealer and the consumer it becomes a legally binding document. Unless a dealer has breached the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA) or Consumer Protection Act (CPA) in a way to specifically trigger a consumer’s right to contract cancellation, there is no right to cancellation, or a "cooling-off" period once a customer signs a contract to purchase a vehicle.
